I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind but now I see
Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. (Ps. 62:1)
David’s soul finds rest in God, his help and his shield. Despite fears and struggles, his mind, his heart, his will are fixed on heaven. He has silenced his mind, teaching it to be still, setting his thoughts on God. He has silenced his heart, quenching the loud cry of desire that roars within, setting his affections on the Word of God. He has silenced his will, denying it the voice of self-desire but making it an echo of God’s calm, whispered voice deep within him; recognized by his conscience. In silent expectation, David has peace within. David waits for God.
When the raging waters of fear and doubt toss us about on the turbulent seas, let us seize the anchor of faith, setting our mind, our heart, and our will on the Word of God for He is the One true source of comfort and peace, a very present help in times of trouble. Let us trust God, let us anchor our lives in Him, that He may carry us through the storms of life. Our footing is sure when firmly planted on the Solid Rock where the dangers, toils, and snares of life on earth cannot overtake and drown us. Yesterday’s clamoring fears have become today’s defeated foes. As our faith increases, our hope swells, and we win a mighty victory. God is our safety and security in life. In Him lies our hope, our comfort, and our peace. Let us fine-tune our compass to the Bright and Morning Star as we navigate the sea of our lives this week.
What doubts and fears are plaguing you today? Won’t you cast your cares upon the Lord? “Be strong and of good courage, fear not, do not be afraid for the Lord your God goes with you, He will not fail you or forsake you” (Duet. 31:6). Today is the perfect day to quiet your mind, your heart, and your will. Place your hope in the Lord and quiet your soul. God is offering you peace when you rely on Him to carry you through the storm. When you cast your fears and doubts on Jesus, you can be like a baby resting near his mother’s heart, content, oblivious to fear or doubt. Let the grace of God go with you. Let the wellspring of life burst forth from the depths of your being. Join your voice with John Newton, hardened man-of-the-sea-turned-believer, and sing out “I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.”
