Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. (Ps. 34:4)
David was an imperfect man anointed by God. He was a man after God’s own heart. He desired God’s presence above all else, despite his shortcomings. His heart was humble; his faith was great. He was a giant slayer, a mighty warrior, and the greatest king Israel ever had. He sought God’s presence in times of trouble and danger, trusting that God would deliver him. He did. When a believer fails and sins, he often runs from God, but David was different. He ran to God, humble and repentant. He sought, he trusted, he prayed. God knew, God heard, God delivered. God, Creator of the world, of man, of circumstances, sent His Son to redeem, His Word to instruct, and prayer to communicate with man. David sought God’s guidance in life, in war, and in leadership. He sought his own lusts in adultery, deceit, and murder. Indulging in his lusts led him to mental anguish and regret for he had sinned against God (Ps. 51).
We would do well to learn from David’s struggles and avoid the lusts of our flesh. Like David, we are prone to wandering from our Lord. But, like David, do we turn to God in repentance, pleading for His mercy, for His forgiveness, for His cleansing? When we do, we find rest for our soul (Matt. 11:28-30). God delivers from fears, from troubles, from circumstances. Today’s news provides ample cause to fear. When we review our day, we find trouble at home, at work, and in our world. But God provides a gentle and peaceable way, the way of trust and hope. When we remember His mighty works in our past, by faith we are strengthened to trust He is nearby for today’s troubles. He sees. He knows. He cares. God can—and will—be with us in the fire just as He was with Daniel and his friends. God would have us look to Him, praise Him for His mighty interventions in days past, certain that He will be with us today, tomorrow, and forever.
God did and He does and He will take good care of you. In this you can rest. When all things and people around you crumble and fall, look up, remember His mighty acts in times past, and strengthen your faith to trust that He is with you today. God is gracious, merciful, and abundant in kindness. You can find hope and safety in your Heavenly Father’s arms. What a wonderful and gracious God He is. “Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.”
