Years–no, decades–ago, we attended church where the hymns were sung. Then we drifted to modern church music. Today, we have returned to the old hymns. Why? For the love of God,; for the love of hymns:
- the majesty and beauty of their poetry,
- deepening our Christian walk,
- lifting our hearts to God,
- magnifying Jesus,
- uniting our loved ones.
The boys grew up listening to the hymns, embedding Christian truths in their hearts and minds. We would often pause to discuss and internalize the strong faith message found in them.
Everywhere we look today trouble is mounting, waters are churning, and the winds of change are blowing. Yet, our family’s soul is still, confident that the Lord is on our side. We have found that
When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul.
Hymns have given our family:
- peace in the midst of life’s storms;
- songs that embed Bible truths deep within us;
- the perfect start to the day.
We sing the hymns at church, at home, in the car, wherever we go (Deut. 6). We have found that the they unite us, joining the generations, clarifying the truths of Scripture, instilling hope and peace in this troubled world.
I believe that today my boys, my husband, and myself would all thank God for His “Amazing Grace.”
