Though He causes grief, yet He will show compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. (Lam. 3:32)

Jesus remained faithful to His Father when He walked this earth, though misunderstood by most. Jeremiah could sing in the dungeon of doom, his eyes fixed on the hope of God. It is in the difficulties of life that the light of God shines. After climbing the Hill of Difficulty, one sits and rests on the mountaintop. He better understands what lies behind and brings into focus what is ahead. After the awful darkness of midnight, one awakens to the flicker of light when the morning dawns. The dove with the healing branch from the olive tree has come. Once again, the compassions of the Lord are being poured out on His people.

When God has accomplished His purpose in us and through us, His tender compassions extend to us. Our losses have made us richer; we have risen by our falls; we live by dying, and by being emptied we are filled. Oh, blessed Lord is He! Yesterday the affliction was great. Today the darkness of night becomes the light of day. Yesterday the storm, today the calm. Yesterday the cross, today the crown. Because we have hope in the Lord, we have the confident assurance that no matter what troubles we encounter, they will not last forever. Because He lives, we can—and we will—endure the dark night. He is patient, faithfully conforming us to the vision He has for us. Let us sing in the dungeon today, fixing our eyes on the hope of the eternal calling in heaven where God Himself is the light, where we walk the streets of gold, where we will join the angelic choir.

Have you grown weary in your walk with God? Remember, the Israelites showed that the more spiritual an exercise, the more difficult it is for flesh and blood to attain it. Remember, also, that God is faithful. For 200 years, He sent His prophets to warn the people to repent before He destroyed them. Today, you have the Bible to guide your life; to help you know what is right and what is wrong. When you let the mercy of God lead you to the cross, you will find hope. He will show you compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. Won’t you let God’s mercy lead you to the cross? Because you are a child of God, nothing can ever consume you. Though your body may die, your soul lives on through all eternity, “great is Thy faithfulness!” “Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine with 10, 000 beside.”
